How Part D plans work
Each Part D plan has a list of covered drugs called a formulary. Drugs are placed in tiers; lower tiers usually cost less. Plans also have preferred pharmacies that can lower your cost.
- Check that every medication you take is on the plan’s formulary.
- Note any rules such as prior authorization or quantity limits.
- There is a yearly cap on what you pay out of pocket for covered drugs.
Extra Help (Low-Income Subsidy)
Extra Help is a federal program that helps people with limited income and resources pay Part D premiums, deductibles, and copays. You can apply through Social Security. If you qualify for Medicaid or a Medicare Savings Program, you usually qualify automatically.
This guide is general education, not advice about a specific plan. Rules and amounts can change each year.
